This is an experiential course where we explore the major muscles and joints of the body and how they relate to yoga practice. Through observation, hands-on exercises, and practice of specific asanas, you will learn the location and function of the key anatomical regions of the body and understand how they relate to asana practice.
This course will enable you to have a better understanding of how to practice asanas safely and in a way to focus on specific muscles and muscular/joint imbalances in your and your students practices. Common stresses and injuries for each part of the body are addressed: including low back, sacroiliac joint, hip, knee, foot, shoulder, wrist, elbow and neck.
You will learn general guidelines on how to apply asana therapeutically for specific injuries, as well as basics in assessing a student to determine the causes of pain, modifications (providing appropriate hands-on support and protection) to maximize the healing and strengthening, and creating a yoga program to bring the body back into balance through the practice of yoga.
The relationship of pranayama and meditation to the other systems of the body is explored and practiced. There is a practice each day of the program to bring the knowledge you gain into an experiential practice.
